A Hellenistic 'Phiale Omphalos' Bronze Bowl, Circa 3rd Century BC

The phiale omphalos is a shallow style Greek bowl with a raised hemispherical protrusion -- the omphalos -- at its center. This represented the omphalos or navel of the world which was believed to be a large sacred hemispherical stone located at the sanctuary of Delphi. According to legend, Zeus had commanded two eagles to fly from opposite sides of the world and where they met at Delphi was the center of the world. This style bowl is often seen in Greek art being used to make offerings to the Gods.

Formed from a single piece of bronze the bowl has a flat base with repousse omphalos at its center surrounded by a floral motif; everted rim with tongue design around the exterior. This example has been carefully and professionally repaired from several large pieces with restoration over the joins. Diameter: ~16 cm. (~6.3). Height: ~3.3 cm. (1.3"). Weight: ~225 gm. (~ 1/2 lb.). Metal composition: Bronze with natural green and black patina. Price US$1,250. Status: Sold. Order #A088.
