B2302. A RARE EGYPTIAN PRE-DYNASTIC PAINTED CONICAL JAR. Naqada III, ca. 3300-3000 BC. The reddish buffware cylindrical body painted with dark purple criss-cross bands imitating the net in which vessels were carried, and decorated in relief with a scalloped line below the rim. 10.25 inches high. Repair to rim with small area of restoration. Cf. W. Needler, Predynastic and Archaic Egypt in the Brooklyn Museum, The Brooklyn Museum, 1984, p. 215, no. 73, pl. 20, for a similar example from Abu Zaidan, Upper Egypt.

B2322. A POLYCHROME STUCCO FUNERARY MASK OF A MAN. Roman Egypt, ca. 2nd century AD. The head bare with curly black hair, the face reddish with a serene expression, the eyes inlaid with clear cast glass over painted black pupils. 6.5 x 8 x 9 inches. Repaired from large fragments with bracket for hanging in the reverse, a little restoration to nose and chin. See Christie's London, 4/99 lot 71 for one of similar style also repaired and estimated at $10,000+. See also a similar mask in the Museum of Art and Archaeology, the University of Missouri.

B2386. A FRAGMENTARY PHOENICIAN MOSAIC GLASS HEAD BEAD, c. mid first mil. BC. Exceptionally large example with half of the face remaining. 1.7". Very rare.



B2387. A CYPRIOT LIMESTONE FIGURE OF A MALE VOTARY. Cypro-Archaic, 6th century BC. The figure wearing a kilt and flat-topped Egyptian-style headdress which falls over the back of his neck. 2.8 x 5.2 inches. Rare.



B2388. A VERY LARGE CYPRIOT BICHROME WARE AMPHORA FROM THE CESNOLA COLLECTION. Cypro-Archaic, 750-600 BC. The tall ovoid body tapering to a narrow flat base, slightly flared straight neck with flat rim, the neck and body decorated with thin bands and concentric circles. 20 x 26 inches. Intact. Provenance: Acquired by Luigi Palma di Cesnola in Cyprus 1865-1873, thence whereabouts uncertain - possibly The Metropolitan Museum of Art, sold at auction by Harmer Rooke Galleries in 1996 to the present owner. Luigi Palma di Cesnola was US Consul to Cyprus 1865-1873. He was born in Northern Italy in 1832. He was trained at the Military Academy of Savoy but for some unknown reason was discharged and left Italy. He served in the British Army during the Crimean War and travelled extensively in the Ottoman Empire. He moved to New York in 1858 and married in 1861. As an experienced soldier he joined the Union forces during the Civil War and retired with the rank of colonel in 1864. 'General' Cesnola was then appointed US Consul to Cyprus in 1865. There Cesnola became interested in ancient art and began purchasing antiquites and even funding teams of diggers. During his stay in Cyprus Cesnola formed a huge collection and managed to circumvent Constantinople's ban on export of antiquities through his excellent relationship with Said Pasha, the Governor of Cyprus. Eventually he shipped 200 cases containing tens of thousands of antiquities back to the US. There he sold 4,426 objects in two installments to the newly established Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York and was appointed the first Director of the Museum. Many of these objects were later deaccessioned and sold at auction.



B2389. AN EARLY CYPRIOT REDWARE VESSEL. Early/Middle Cypriot, 2300-1650 BC. The vessel, probably a baby-feeder, with nipple spout issuing from the front of the hemispheric body, two small knobs on the rim above, a vertical ring handle at the rear. 4 x 6 inches. Rare.



B2390. A FINE BRONZE TERRET RING WITH INSCRIPTION. Syria or Holy Land, ca. early-mid 1st millenium BC. The heavy cast ring a rein guide for a chariot, with knob and bow ornamentation, one side with hatch and x designs, the other with two circular stamps and a four character inscription. 3.6 x 3.8 inches. Very rare and deserving of further study. Nearly identical in form to another in a German private collection though with a different inscription.



B2391. A VERY RARE LEAD WEIGHT WITH INSCRIPTION. Syria or Holy Land, ca. 1st millenium BC. Of truncated pyramidal form with all four sides covered with clear inscriptions, probably Semitic. 2.1 inches. Very rare and deserving of further study. On custom stand.



B2392. A JUDAEAN GLASS PENDANT WITH MENORAH, 1st-3rd century. Olive green glass with clear menorah. Suspension loop broken. 20mm. Rare.



B2393. A HOLY LAND LEAD SEAL WITH MENORAH. Found in the Holy Land, uncertain age but not new. Circular form with clear menorah with uncertain devices beside. 20 mm. Needs further study.



B2394. A HOLYLAND INSCRIBED PENDANT, ca. 1st millennium BC. The black stone pendant inscribed with two Semitic? characters, drilled suspension hole. 1.2". Rare, deserving of further study.

B2397. A HOLY LAND TERRACOTTA ANIMAL. Roman Period, 1st century BC/AD. The fine redware animal with stubby tail and collar, incised hatchmarks for fur and mane. 6.3 inches. This piece said to have been found near Bethlehem. A very similar piece from Bethlehem, Barakat p.498, brought $1650 several years ago. Excellent condition.
