8130. EXTREMELY INTERESTING INSCRIPTION FROM GREEK SYRACUSE, c. 5th-4th century BC. Consisting of a thick heavy bronze segment of a circle, engraved with the Greek letters SYRAKO, a triangle and a swastica, one possible archaic letter below and other engraved short lines. Set at the right side with a large blue cabachon glass, and at the left with what appears to be a silver coin of Syracuse, at least a silver disc with the head of a lady facing left. 1.5 x 3.75 inches. A fascinating object that deserves further study. Any additional information on what this object might be and its function would be welcomed. Extremely rare one of a kind artifact. All ancient Greek inscriptions are eagerly sought especially inscribed with name of such a famous city. $7500 estimate.

The buff-ware pitcher with high looped strap handle with eyed appendage on top, the surface covered with very finely rendered geometric designs in slate blue. 6.5” x 9” height. Intact with some fading to body but a scarcer and more desirable type with the bug-eyed appendages atop the handle. $1750 estimate.

7974. RARE MINOAN STAMP SEAL. Late Bronze Age, Late Helladic II or III. The square seal of pink marble with drilled knob for suspension, the surface carved with a square with spiral corners, a 10 pointed star at the center. 19 mm. All Minoan items are very rare and desirable. $4750 estimate.

The bronze object of crescent form with the ends terminating in snake heads, central area with four celtic heads bordered on both sides by double twisted rings. 3.25 inches. 7991. RARE HELLENISTIC/EARLY ROMAN BALLISTA BOLT, 3rd-1st century BC. The bronze ballista bolt of large arrowhead form with tenon on trailing end. The Roman ballista was a large stationary crossbow that was mechanically wound up and shot bolts with tremendous force. It was the Roman equivalent of a small artillery piece. Very rare and in excellent condition. 2.9 inches. Dr Mike Bishop, co-author of 'Roman Military Equipment', suggests that this may be a rarer Hellenistic ballista bolt. The asymmetrical grove acted as a kind of 'rifiling' which caused the bolt to rotate and by this means stabilized its flight. $1500 estimate.
