8287. A RARE VILLANOVAN LARGE BICONICAL URN. ca. 8th-7th century BC. The heavy single handled impasto vessel covered with complex incised geometric designs including large ornamented swasticas in triple squares around the waist. 12 x 15.5 inches. Intact with a couple of minor abrasions one side. An especially large and fine example said to be from Tarquinia. Very rare this nice. Museum quallity. $12,500 estimate.

8288. EXCEPTIONAL ETRUSCAN BUCCHERO SOTTILE BOWL, ca. 6th-4th century BC. The graceful dark gray bowl of thin fabric with ridged shoulder and slightly carinated rim, the base rounded upward in a central omphalos, the exterior surface burnished to a high gloss. 7" x 12". Two insignificant rim chips. An exceptional large example of the finest in Etruscan pottery. $6500 estimate.

8290. A HOLY LAND TERRACOTTA OSSUARY, c. 1st century BC-AD. The heavy ossuary (bone box) fitted with a sliding lid with lug handle and decorated with a triple wave pattern formed by the maker's fingers in the wet clay, the whole covered with intact white slip. 9 x 12 x 32 inches. 75 lbs. Stable age crack, small corner chip but very strong and hard material. Extremely rare. $7500 estimate.

8292. AN IMPORTANT ROMAN SILVER FIGURE OF JUPITER, ca. 1st-2nd century AD. The god standing naked in the classic pose with right hand wielding his thunderbolt, his eagle perched on the outstretched left hand. Done in fine classical style with detailed musculature and features, wearing an original gold torque around his neck. 2.2". Choice condition, important and extremely rare. On a custom stand. This piece was listed at Christie's in 1998 estimated at $5000-$7000. $12,500 estimate.

SOME SCARCE ROMAN IRON TOOLS: One lot purchased from us from this collection has been dated by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory to 120 AD with a probable range of 80 AD - 160 AD. This was done using an innovative technique which measures the carbon isotope ratio of the trace carbon in the iron. This carbon comes from the wood used in the production of the iron which must be of essentially the same age as the tool itself. Results published in the journal, Radiocarbon.

Finely worked double hooked implement with double coiled middle that apparently served as a heavy spring, a very ingenious and advanced design that well demonstrates the advanced state of Roman technology. 2.8". Very intriguing and worthy of further study. An important technohistoric item. The only one I've seen. $3500 estimate.
