8979. AN EXCESSIVELY RARE CYCLADIC SPOUTED EWER. Early Cycladic II-III, Kastri Group, Keros-Syros Culture, ca. 2400 BC. The highly burnished mirror-surface blackware vessel of spherical form with slant mouth spout, incised 'rope' decoration on the handle. 4 x 7 inches. Intact and choice with light soil adhering. 8981. IMPORTANT GREEK ALABASTRON CARVED WITH A SCENE FROM THE ILLIAD. Hellenistic, ca. 3rd-1st century BC. The alabaster perfume vessel carved in relief with Achilles dragging the body of Hector behind his chariot, ornamental floral registers above and below, traces of sheet gold overlay, remains of an ancient bronze pin embedded in small suspension? holes on the sides, the whole with light reddish iron oxide stains. 1.5 x 4.4 inches. A unique and museum quality example of fine Greek art. $37,500 estimate.

8982. LIMESTONE STELE OF THE YOUNG DIONYSOS AMONG GRAPEVINES. c. 2nd century BC-AD. A sizable limestone figure of the young god standing nude in a grape arbor with his robes fallen down around his thighs, his ringlets falling over his shoulders. 6.5 x 9 x11 inches. 30 lbs. A fine erotically charged piece even though the face was unfortunately chipped away perhaps by early Christians. Free standing. Rare. $12,500 estimate.

8983. A GREEK MARBLE VOTIVE STELE. Eastern Mediterranean, ca. 3rd-1st century BC. The marble slab topped by a triangular cornice with three projecting akroteria engraved with acanthus, a mounting tenon at the bottom, the body inscribed with four lines of Greek characters: ETOUS R(with line over P)KAI IB(lines over the I&B) /DIOGENHS ARTEMI/DWROU QEA ANDHNH/EUCHN. which read "In the year 100 and 12, Diogenes son of Artemidorus offered this to please the Goddess". If the years date from the beginning of the Seleucid era, this would date the erection of the stele to 200 BC. 3 x 12 x 25 inches. 65 lbs. 8984. A CHOICE TROY CLASS STONE HAMMER AXE. Middle Bronze Age, ca. 21st-17th century BC. The finely polished socketed stone axe of the same archaeological class as those found by Schlieman at Troy. 6.75 inches. Cf. 'The Gold of Troy' #166-169. The material is a lustrous jade-like blue gray stone, perhaps serpentine. The finest example I've carried. $3750 estimate.

8985. A VERY RARE LARGE MACEDONIAN TRANSPORT AMPHORA, ca. 3rd-2nd century BC. Of globular form with wide neck and heavy rim, a blunt projecting knob at the bottom, this type used for storage and transport of non-liquid goods. 16 x 23 inches. Intact with considerable sea encrustation. Choice intact example. An extremely rare large Macedonian artifact. See 'Chronicles Of The Roman World', Timothy R. 8987. A SUPERB GREEK BRONZE PALSTAVE AXE, ca. 6th-5th century BC. The heavy bronze axe with two flanged channels to receive the handle. 7.6 inches. Excellent condition with superb blue and green patina. The finest example I've carried. Extremely rare museum quality example of fine Greek toolmaking. $4750 estimate.

8988. A LARGE GREEK SPEAR POINT, ca. 5th Century BC. Long, finely worked socketed blade with central ridge, two holes for attachment of streamers at the base. Length: 19 inches. Metal composition: Bronze with natural green patina with light soil encrustations. Provenance: Said to have been found near Syracuse in Sicily early this century. Fine Greek weapons and military gear are quite rare in any condition. Here we have a choice example of an exceptionally large spear point with the edges still quite sharp. A spear like this brings vividly to life the epic battles of the heroic Greek age. We can imagine this piece being broken in the midst of battle as it is in two pieces with a clean break in the middle. Excellent and very rare example, the edges still quite sharp. $3750 estimate.

8990. AN EXCEPTIONAL GREEK BRONZE FIBULA. Hellenistic, c. 2nd century BC. The bow-type fibula with tail extending past the catchplate where it is turned back and wrapped around the body, the head wrapped round itself to form a spring terminating in the pin which rests in the catchplate, the whole with a superb beautiful sea-green patina. 2.85". 8991. A FINE GREEK BRONZE BULL, ca. 4th-2nd century BC. The bull with hump and large dewlap standing alert with raised horns, its head slightly turned to the right. 2.5 x 2.6 inches. Losses to rear legs and tip of right horn. Choice Hellenistic style. Very rare this nice. $4750 estimate.

8992. A FINE GREEK BULL'S HEAD, ca. 4th century BC. The terracotta head with wonderfully modeled features including incised eyes and detailed fur, two mortise holes for horns, the whole covered with white slip. 2.5 inches. An applicae from what must have been a magnificent large Greek krater. $1250 estimate.

8993. AN IMPORTANT GREEK BRONZE WARRIOR. Archaic, ca. 6th century BC. The spade-bearded warrior wearing helmet with cheek pieces, reinforced over the brow and pointed at back, his tunic reaching down to his thighs, his right arm raised to brandish a weapon, his left down at his side. 2.5 inches. Excellent proportions and detail with sharp features and incised detail in beard and tunic. Museum quality, a wonderful example of early Greek art. See eg. the wonderful 5.6 inch example of similar style and form in Sotheby's Dec. 1999 catalog estimated at $200,000-$300,000! Extremely rare. $37,500 estimate.

8994. A SUPERB ARCHAIC GREEK PROTOME, ca. 6th century BC. The bust of a goddess done in the finest archaic style with high cheekbones, tightly curled hair under a high polos and with a wonderful archaic smile. 4.5 x 5.6 inches. Repair to base but face intact. A museum quality example of the finest Greek art. Free standing. $9500 estimate.

8995. A FINE GREEK FIGURE OF A MOUNTED HORSEMAN, ca. 3rd-2nd century BC. The beardless warrior with slightly raised head possibly Alexander the Great. He sits on his rearing horse holding the reins in one hand and a Macedonian type shield in the other, the whole wonderfully composed and executed. 4.1 x 4.75 inches. Considerable remains of white, black and red pigment. From the collection of an American diplomat stationed in Italy in the early part of this century. On Italian marble base. $6500 estimate.

8997. A GREEK EROS RIDING A DOLPHIN, ca. 4th-3rd century BC. The boy God of love playing a lyre as the dolphin leaps from the waves. 5.5 x 5.75 inches. Intact with remains of blue, white and red pigment under ancient soil. Root marks on the interior. A very rare and classic scene. $4500 estimate.

8998. A CHOICE GREEK 'TANAGRA' FIGURE OF EROS, ca. 3rd-2nd century BC. The young God of Love depicted naked in an animated pose, his right leg forward and hands outstretched, head turned to the left with a mischevious smile. 5 inches. Repair. Remains of red pigment on the hair and white on the wings. Very rare this nice. A wonderful example of the Hellenistic genius for capturing naturalistic poses portraying the human body in action. $3750 estimate.

8999. A FINE GREEK FIGURE OF SILENOS, ca. 4th-3rd century BC. The satyr depicted with long beard and hairy chest and legs wearing a loincloth and wreath. His left hand reaches back to support the leg of an naked erote he carries on his back, the erote's right arm in turn reaching around and holding onto the satyr's shoulder. 3.25 inches. Wonderful composition and detail, though with losses. Very rare. $2750 estimate.

9000. A WONDERFUL GREEK FRAGMENTARY APHRODITE, ca. 4th-3rd century BC. The goddess naked except for her robes which have slipped below the tops of her thighs, still wearing only a necklace and armlets and bracelets on both arms, her long braids falling over her shoulders. 2.8 x 3.5 inches. Even with losses a quintessential portrayal of feminine beauty. On custom stand. Very rare this fine. $4750 estimate.

The tall slim figure of an winged young maiden, perhaps Eos (Dawn) standing against a rock outcroping, her robes knotted below her belly, her right arm stretched downward, her right raised, likely once holding a victory wreath in her missing left hand. 9 inches. Repaired with a couple of small gaps. Considerable remains of polychrome. An exceptional and rare figure of the finest style. $12,500 estimate.

9002. A LARGE GREEK BRONZE PITCHER, ca. 2nd-1st century BC. The pitcher of wide ovoid form on everted ring base, with a high conical neck with ridged shoulder opening to a wide rim with turned down edge, the handle with tapered incised handle terminating in a wide crescent ornamented with four curled knobs at the top, a palmette formed applicae at the shoulder. 7 x 8 inches. Broad area of reverse side patched. Still a very rare and presentable example of fine Greek bronzework. $4750 estimate.

The ceremonial offering bowl of shallow form with ridged shoulder and slightly everted rim, the bottom with a lotus pattern with raised omphalos at center. 1.8 x 7 inches. Choice example in excellent condition, the bronze considerably thicker than in most examples. The whole covered with a fine chestnut, green and blue patina. Very rare this nice. $14,500 estimate.

9008. A VERY HIGH QUALITY GREEK RED FIGURE LEKANIS. South Italian, ca. 450-400 BC. The lid with a wave pattern running around the rim, the top decorated with two fine young female heads separated by palmettes, each wearing strings of white pearls, their hair bound with caps with white hairpieces over the brows, the base with fine double handles with side spurs, its side with vertical linear design, the knob of the lid with a black thunderbolt on red ground. 3.5 x 5 inches. The quality such that it is most probably attributable to a known painter. Choice intact condition with very light deposits. Extremely rare this nice. $6500 estimate.

The shallow bowl on ring base, the rim ornamented with a band of finely impressed tongue design, the whole with a superb practically flawless mirror glaze except for a reserved red sun-shaped circle and ring under the base, twin suspension holes in the ring of the base. 1.5 x 5.25 inches. 9021. A MUSEUM QUALITY CAMPANIAN OLPE, ca. 300 BC. The elegant black glazed mug with dual strap handle attached to the wide rim, the entire body with four bands of elegant protrusions pressed from the interior while the clay was still plastic, the form in imitation of glass vessels of similar design. 3.25 x 3.5 inches. Choice intact condition. Completely uncleaned, the surface still covered with original lime deposits from the ground, traces of fine root marks and roots in the lime especially under the base. A wonderful and extremely rare example. $4750 estimate.

9025. A RARE AND IMPORTANT STAMPED GREEK PITHOS FRAGMENT, ca. 1st-2nd century AD. The heavy rim shard from a large terracotta storage jar stamped EUKARPIA which translates as 'good seeds' indicating that this was probably a Greek agriculturalist's storage jar for the best grain which would be set aside for the next season's planting. 3.5 x 5.3 inches. An important and interesting artifact of the daily life of the ancient Greeks. $1750 estimate.

9045. A GREEK MARBLE VOTIVE STELE. Eastern Mediterranean, ca. 4th-1st century BC. The marble slab carved with the figure of Hecate, goddess of the night, dressed in long robes standing within her temple entrance flanked by low walls, she stands facing holding flaming torches in each hand. Two lines of faint Greek inscription visible below apparently defaced by early Christians. 3 x 19 x 21 inches. 95 lbs. $12,500 estimate.
