10080. LARGE EXTINCT FOSSIL TREE SECTION. Synchysidendron species, a close relative of the more common Lepidodendron but with nicer more regular bark pattern. Carboniferous period, 360-300 million years ago. Lepidodendron trees were the giants of the Carboniferous era growing up to 150 feet tall and 6 feet in diameter. They were among the first true large trees to appear and dominated the land during the Carboniferous. Lepidodendron tree image. These trees were members of the Lycopsida clade and are now all extinct with only their miniature relatives the club mosses remaining. This is an especially large section with excellent quality bark impressions. 11 x 12 x ~2 inches. 13 lb. 10069. THE AMERICAN AGRICULTURALIST, 1864, 356 pps., marbled covers. Fascinating book published to bring agricultural information to the early American farmer. Hundreds and hundreds of brief entries on all possible subjects of interest to farmers and ranchers interspersed with numerous quaint ads for everything from fruit and vegetable seeds to cures for stammering and clothes wringers. The American Agriculturalist was established in 1842 and was of equal importance to the Bible found in nearly every early American farmer's home which was the vast majority of the population in those times. The fountain with Poseidon/Neptune holding a large fish whose mouth is the spout from which water pours to a grated basin below. 35 x 60 x 24 inches deep. Weight is several hundred pounds. Finely rendered painting in gouache on paper with six different animals comprised of 31 copulating figures, fine calligraphic script in black and red on verso. 10007. AN EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE MESOSAUR SKELETON. Mesosaurus brasiliensis. Permian, Brazil. The Mesosaurs were fast swimming predators which lived in fresh water, probably preying on small fish, insects and other aquatic invertebrates. They are found in Permian rocks in Brazil and South Africa, indicating that these two continents were joined at the time. The fossil measuring 18 inches in a 12 x 21 inch, 20 lb. matrix. Great detail with teeth and all digits showing. Some restoration to bones as usual. The skeletons normally found and available on the market are only 12 –16 inches long, however this one measures an amazing 29.5 inches along the backbone! 10008. A CAVE BEAR SKULL, about 80,000 BC. Found in the Vadu Crisului Körösren cave in Romania. Only the upper part and the two laniary tooth have remained, but this example shows still the impressive size of these early hunters. 50 cm long and 18 cm high. No repairs. 10009. RARE FOSSIL SKULL OF MEGALOCEROS, Megaloceros giganteus, Pleistocene. The skull was found in Bensheim Germany. Size of span from horn to horn is 70 cm (only parts of the horns are remaining, but still an impressive skull). Height is 23 cm. Megaloceros was a large elk common in Europe. It sported perhaps the largest antler rack of any of the deer family as can be seen in the massive antler bases of the current specimen and the model (not included). 10037. A FINE VICTORIAN WHITE METAL BUST OF 'DIOMED', c. 19th century. 5 x 9.5 inches. Excellent casting. Some patina wear as to be expected of this type of antique but very presentable. Diomedes was king of Aetolia and one of the bravest of Grecian chiefs in the Trojan war, ranking next to Achilles and Ajax. Homer writes extensively of his exploits. $1800 estimate.

10038. A FINE VICTORIAN CLASSICAL PLAQUE, ca. 19th century. Depicting a semi-nude maiden reclining in her bed embracing a dove which kisses her neck. 4 x 7 inches. The material appears to be the same as that used in the exquisite 'Union' cases of top quality daguerrotypes which takes extremely fine detail. See our lot 10030 above for an example of such a case. 10039. A FINE VICTORIAN CLASSICAL BRONZE LAMP. Italian, ca. 19th century. The statue base depicting the famous 'Venus Callipygies' after the ancient marble original in which the maiden is depicted in the act of raising her gown to expose her charms. The Venus 23 inches on its base, the lamp 41 inches total. Excellent condition and very high quality Italian foundry work. The lamp stand is attached by four small screws to the back of the gown and could be removed if desired. $6500 estimate.

10040. A SUPERB BRONZE STATUE OF THE YOUNG DIONYSUS FROM POMPEII. Italian foundry, 19th century. Superb full sized copy of the original found in Pompeii, even down to the surface which has the appearance of an antiquity. 24 inches. Sometimes called Narcissus as the gaze seems to be downward at his own reflection, it is now generally believed to represent the young Dionysos due to the grape bunches in his hair which are a typical attribute of Dionysos. This statue has been called one of the finest representations of the youthful male form in Classical art. $8000 estimate.
