7063. ARIADNE ON THE PANTHER, Johann Heinrich Dannecker, 1758-1841. A superb large bronze after the original marble version in the Städtische Galerie-Liebighaus, Museum alter Plastik, Frankfurt. 26 x 30 x 12 inches, 140 lbs, signed Dannecker. One of the most celebrated German sculptors of the early 19th century, Dannecker produced many famous works including a beautiful Sappho in the Staatsgalerie, Stuttgart, and a famous bust of Schiller. Ariade was the daughter of King Minos of Crete who helped the Athenian hero Theseus to defeat the Minotaur. Theseus then took Ariade with him but abandoned her on one of the Grecian isles. There Dionysos found her and married her and Zeus granted her immortality. The panther is the sacred animal of Dionysos. Rear edge of base slightly out of true, otherwise excellent condition. A magnificent and impressive piece that will transform the space it’s in. $17,500
