10080. LARGE EXTINCT FOSSIL TREE SECTION. Synchysidendron species, a close relative of the more common Lepidodendron but with nicer more regular bark pattern. Carboniferous period, 360-300 million years ago. Lepidodendron trees were the giants of the Carboniferous era growing up to 150 feet tall and 6 feet in diameter. They were among the first true large trees to appear and dominated the land during the Carboniferous. Lepidodendron tree image. These trees were members of the Lycopsida clade and are now all extinct with only their miniature relatives the club mosses remaining. 10007. AN EXCEPTIONALLY LARGE MESOSAUR SKELETON. Mesosaurus brasiliensis. Permian, Brazil. The Mesosaurs were fast swimming predators which lived in fresh water, probably preying on small fish, insects and other aquatic invertebrates. They are found in Permian rocks in Brazil and South Africa, indicating that these two continents were joined at the time. The fossil measuring 18 inches in a 12 x 21 inch, 20 lb. matrix. Great detail with teeth and all digits showing. Some restoration to bones as usual. The skeletons normally found and available on the market are only 12 –16 inches long, however this one measures an amazing 29.5 inches along the backbone! 10009. RARE FOSSIL SKULL OF MEGALOCEROS, Megaloceros giganteus, Pleistocene. The skull was found in Bensheim Germany. Size of span from horn to horn is 70 cm (only parts of the horns are remaining, but still an impressive skull). Height is 23 cm. Megaloceros was a large elk common in Europe. It sported perhaps the largest antler rack of any of the deer family as can be seen in the massive antler bases of the current specimen and the model (not included).
