FRANZ TILL 7072. EXQUISITE 19TH CENTURY GERMAN HAND PAINTED PORCELAIN PLAQUE. Europe, Germany, Franz Till, c. mid 19th century. A finely painted oval porcelain plaque with a portrait of a distinguished gentleman in a 3/4 pose, wearing a black jacket, bow tie, and white dress shirt, his visage appearing remarkably realistic with a well-manicured beard and side-parted coiffure. Signed Fr. Till Dresden on the lower right for the notable artist Franz Till who according to Blattel was active around 1866 and was known for such portraits on porcelain and photographs. Till began as an independent painter and later developed a company which was active through the remainder of the 19th century. Size: 5" W x 7" H (12.7 cm x 17.8 cm). Appears nearly photographic even under magnification. An exceptionally fine piece.
Some of Till's work has sold for considerable sums. Robert Eickholt is an early innovator in the American studio art glass movement. He created the Eickholt Glass Co. in 1978 to produce art glass pieces designed by him but produced by his company artisans. However this piece was created in 1977 prior to the establishment of his company, and as such is an original work by the artist's own hand and thus of considerably more value. Eickholt recently announced his retirement from his business.
Provenance: A private New Jersey collection. Purchased from the artist at an antiques show in the late 1970's.
