7456. EARLY CHRISTIAN PILGRIM FLASK. Egypt, c. 6th century AD. This pilgrims flask depicts St. Menas as an orant, flanked by two stylized objects on both sides. Twin handles surround the center spout. These flasks were used to carry oil back from the shrine of the saint at Abu Mena, Egypt. A similar flask may be found at the Louvre. 4 inches high. Choice intact condition. Very rare early Christian artifact.

Provenance: From the estate of a prominent Egyptologist active in the early part of the 20th century. Brought to the US with the family in 1954.
