RARE LATE GOTHIC MASTERWORK 13044. EXCEPTIONAL WALNUT MADONNA AND CHILD. Northern French or Flemish, late Gothic period, late 15th century. Crowned Madonna and child figure carved in three-quarters round. Strong Gothic form and quality evident in the full, open face of the Madonna heightened with strongly lidded eyes, good length to the hair and a slight, almost imperceptible, smile. A unique and particularly attractive example of late Gothic Northern European carving. Generally excellent condition commensurate with age and wear. Height of figure is 15 inches (38 centimetres). Base is newer.
Provenance: A prestigious Western New York State estate. The piece with the remains of a French export sticker on the back. These export stickers were affixed to antiques in the 19th century to document legal export from France.
