7569. FINE EARLY ISLAMIC SPIRAL BLOWN GLASS BOTTLE, c. 1200 AD. During the middle ages, when Europe fell into decline, art and technology flourished in the Islamic world. This bottle is an excellent example of the early Islamic glass blower's art, demonstrating fine control over the raked exterior of the piece. Aqua green blown glass with tapering neck and the cylindrical body raked into pattern of ribbed swirls. Height: 13.0 cm. (5.1"). Condition: Choice, completely intact with subtle silvery iridescence.

7436. RARE LARGE MAMLUK CUT ENAMELED GILT GLASS PANEL, Syria, c. 1300's or later. See 'Masterpieces of Glass', p. 80-81 for the type. The panel with an intricate border of interwoven designs laboriously cut into the glass, the low areas all filled with faded gold, large turquoise blue Islamic inscription beautifully enameled in the central panel, the inscription again hand cut into the glass, the low areas filled with faded gold. 7.25 inches circumference, 6 inches in height. One corner shard loose (propped slightly askew in image). Even in its current condition an important piece of ancient glass. Enameled and gilt Mamluk glass is among the rarest and most sought after of ancient glasses. Even the wonderful examples in the reference cited do not have the intricate cut design underlying the enamels. Enlarged front view. Enlarged back view. Rare.

12988. HOLY LAND POTTERY. Jar with two loop handles and painted design. Ummayad period. 7th-8th century AD. Sizable buff ware carinated jar with white slip and brown spirals on the shoulder. Two wide strap handles and wide slightly out turned base. 10 x 9 inches. Rare. Excellent condition with no repair or restoration. Finely rendered painting in gouache on paper with six different animals comprised of 31 copulating figures, fine calligraphic script in black and red on verso. This zoomorphic type of erotic art was believed to increase the owner's sexual potency. 8 x 13 inches. Much better than photo which doesn't capture the excellent detail.

8403. YELLOW SAFFRON CROCUS, A painting from the collection of H.H. The Maharaja of Jaipur. India, Jaipur, c. 1910. Superbly done gesso painting of a yellow saffron crocus on very finely laid artist's paper. 4.5 x 6". A true masterwork rendered with a single hair brush. Must be seen under magnification to be appreciated.

Provenance: Acquired at an upscale estate sale in New Jersey in the 1990's by the current owner. There were two paintings in this collection from the same hand, one with the official seal of the Maharaja of Jaipur signed and dated 1910. This one unfortunately does not carry his seal but is clearly by the hand of the same artist.
