Classical Coin ID for Windows helps to identify classical coins by searching for legends
or partial legends. It can generally identify the Emperor and/or the Provincial Mint.
There are several thousand Imperial obverse legends, and fewer Provincial obverse and
reverse legends in the included database. The price is $45 postpaid in the US, $50 international airmail.

INSTALLATION:

*Important Note: This version of CCID for Windows has been designed to run at a
Windows screen resolution of 1024x768 or greater. Please run Windows at this resolution when
using CCID or the forms may extend off the bottom of the screen. When I figure out
how to automatically adapt to the screen resolution I will issue an updated version. So
much for Window's vaunted device independence!

Copy all files from the diskette to a directory on your hard drive. Eg. MD \CCID. CD
\CCID. COPY A:*.* Also YOU MUST COPY the supplied files VBRUN300.DLL and
THREED.VBX and KEYSTAT.VBX to your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory if they
aren't already there. From Windows go to the File Manager and click COINID3.EXE to
run it, or you may use Windows to install a program icon and click that to run.

OPERATION:

1. Click on one of the drop down menus to load either Roman Imperial Emperors (for
obverse legends - mostly Imperial but includes some Provincial obverse legends in
Latin.) or Roman Provincial Emperors (for Greek Imperial obverse legends) or Roman
Provincial Mints (for Greek Imperial reverse legends).

2. If you selected Provincial Mints you may further select either Greek or Latin reverse
legends by clicking the Greek or Latin option button in the Search For Box. In any case
these option buttons will display which language you are working in.

3. Enter a search string containing a legend or partial legend in the Search For Box. Use
capital letters (except to enter several Greek letters as noted). If you are entering Greek a
pop-up table of Greek letters and the correct keys for entering them will appear. (Note:
Greek c & v will display correctly only after the Enter key is pressed). Do NOT include
spaces or periods in the legend. To see ALL ENTRIES, clear the Search For box and
press Enter.

Classical Coin ID contains a powerful legend search capability. It can search for
complete or partial legends. Built-in pattern matching provides a versatile tool for
searching. The pattern-matching features allow you to include wildcard characters, such
as those recognized by the operating system, to match legends. The wildcard characters
and what they match are shown in the following table:

	Character(s):	Matches in pattern:

	?	Any single character
	*	Zero or more characters
[charlist]	Any single character in charlist
[!charlist]	Any single character not in charlist

A group of one or more characters (charlist) enclosed in square brackets [ ] can be used
to match any single character in a legend. This is especially useful if a letter in the
legend could possibly be one or the other of several letters with similar forms. Eg. if a
letter could either be C or G, include [CG] at that point in your entry. The search will
match all legends with either C or G in that position. Another common use would be
Greek [ADL].

The general rules for entering a partial legend are:

Always use an * at the beginning of the search legend unless you are sure that the partial
legend is at the beginning of the complete legend. Eg. *CAE* unless C is the first letter
in the legend then use CAE*.

Always use an * at the end of the search legend unless you are sure that the partial legend
is at the end of the complete legend. Eg. *VIII* unless you are sure that the legend ends
in VIII, in which case use *VIII.

Use one or more question marks (?) in the search legend wherever there are one or more
letters you are not sure of. Eg. *NE?OC??VD*

Put an * within the search legend wherever an unknown number of letters are not certain.
Eg. *NE*VD*

Whenever a single letter could be one of several letters with similar forms, insert those
possible letters within square brackets [ ] at that location in the search legend. Eg.
DN*AV[CG]*

In general start to search with only that part of the legend you are certain of, then if there
are many matches, try various possibilities for the least uncertain letters remaining.

4. After entering the search string legend, then click on an entry in the left Find Box to
view the corresponding legends in the right Find box.
