SALADIN ENTHRONED

12869. ISLAMIC, SALADIN. Ayyubids. Egypt. al-Nasir I Salah al-Din Yusuf (Saladin). AH 564-589 / AD 1169-1193. AE Dirhem (30mm, 13.32 g, 3h). Unlisted (Mayyafariqin[?]) mint. Dated AH 586 (AD 1215/6). Saladin enthroned facing, holding globus; name and titles of al-Nasir I Salah al-Din Yusuf (Saladin) in outer margin / Name and titles of Abbasid caliph in three lines; partial mint formula and AH in outer margins. Whelan Type III, 258-60; Balog, Ayyubids 182; Album 791.4. This is an image of the great Saladin, the most famous and well-known of all the rulers of Crusader times, if not the most famous, and revered Islamic ruler of all time. VF, brown patina. Provenance: From the Warden Family Collection, one of the finest and most extensive collections of Turkoman style coins.

Saladin was the first Sultan of Egypt and Syria and the founder of the Ayyubid dynasty. A Muslim of Kurdish origin, Saladin led the Muslim opposition to the European Crusaders in the Levant. He is well known in the west from his battles and relationship with Richard the Lionheart of England. At the height of his power, his sultanate included Egypt, Syria, Mesopotamia, Hejaz, Yemen, and other parts of North Africa.

CHOICE EXAMPLE OF AN EXTREMELY RARE ISSUE

11245. ARTUQUIDS OF MARDIN, ISLAMIC, Anatolia & al-Jazira (Post-Seljuk). Artuqids (Kayfa & Amid). Fakhr al-Din Qara Arslan. AH 543-570 / AD 1148-1174. AE Dirhem (28mm, 9.97 g, 4h). Dated AH 570 (AD 1174). Draped facing bust; date to left; to right, small winged figure facing left, holding bow / Name, titles, and pedigree of Qara Arlsan; to left and right, name and title of the Abbasid Caliph al-Mustanjid. S&S Type 8; Album 1280.8. Good VF, brown patina. Extremely rare and a choice example.

This issue dates to five years after the death of Caliph al-Mustanjid. Spengler and Sayles (p. 24) note: "The use of the Caliph's name so long after his death suggests possible unwillingness on the part of Qara Arlsan to recognize the new Calip, al-Mustadi."

Draped male busts, vis-a-vis; name and title of Najm al-Din Alpi around; tamgha to lower left / Byzantine emperor standing facing being crowned by the Theotokos standing facing; continuation of titles and genealogy around. S&S Type 28; Album 1827.3. Good VF, brown patina.

8636. ARTUQUIDS OF MARDIN, QUTB AL-DIN IL-GHAZI, 1176-1184 AD. AE Dirhem, Spengler/Sayles 32. Two diademed busts facing, heads turned slightly to lower r., date above/Legend. EF. Scarce. Influenced by Byzantine coins of Heraclius & son. Excellent example as good or better than the Spengler/Sayles plate coin.

Nyamaa -; Album 1968; SNA Tubingen XIVc 847-51. Near VF, dark green patina, rough encrustation. The rare largest type coin of this historic ruler who conquered the world's largest empire.

AKBAR THE GREAT

11306. INDIA, MUGHAL EMPIRE, JALAL AL-DIN MUHAMMAD AKBAR (AKBAR THE GREAT). 1556-1605. AR Rupee (18mm, 11.38 g, 3h). No mint signature, but probablY Urdu Zafar Qarin. Dated Ilahi 32 (AD 1586/7). KM 91.1. Good VF.

Akbar was the 3rd and arguably the greatest of the Mughal emperors. Under his reign he expanded the empire to nearly the entire Indian sub continent. Famous as a patron of the arts and architecture and for his tolerance of various religions India experienced a great flowering of art and science during his reign.
