11428. ZEUGITANIA, CARTHAGE, AR Shekel. Time of Hannibal. Carthago Nova, circa 218-206 BC. Bare male head of Hannibal? left / Horse right, palm tree behind. Villaronga 1973, 142; CNH p. 71, 64; BMC 104. 7.26g, 20mm, 12h. Near VF. The head is traditionally thought to be that of Hannibal. Very rare.

11861. CARTHAGE, First Punic War. Circa 264-241 BC. AR Trishekel (29mm, 19.04 g, 12h). Carthage mint. Wreathed head of Tanit left / Horse standing right; behind, palm tree. MAA 43; SNG Copenhagen (Africa) -. Fine, toned, heavy scratches, a few minor deposits. Provenance: The Continental Collection.

THE LARGEST PUNIC COIN

8588. ZEUGITANIA, CARTHAGE, late 3rd century BC. AE44, Sear 6533, 102gm. Head Tanit l. wreathed with corn, wearing single drop earring./Horse stg. r., above sun-disk between two uraeus cobras. VG. Excessively rare, one of the largest, rarest and most impressive of all Greek coins and missing from many major collections. Nearly all the very few extant examples are in very worn condition as is the current example.



8589. ZEUGITANIA, CARTHAGE, ca. 221-202 BC. AE30, SNG Copenhagen 334, Sear 6507. Head of Tanit wreathed with corn l./Horse stg. r., palm tree beyond. AEF. There is evidence this issue may have been struck by an Italian mint under Hannibal during his occupation of Italy. A wonderful large well centered example with great detail, style and a choice chestnut patina. Very rare especially this nice.


11868. ZEUGITANIA, CARTHAGE, First Punic War. Circa 264-241 BC. AE Dishekel (27mm, 15.53 g, 12h). Uncertain Sardinian mint. Wreathed head of Tanit left / Head of horse right; pellet before. MAA 58a; SNG Copenhagen (Africa) 193-4. VF, green and reddish-brown patina. Provenance: The Continental Collection.


4080. ZEUGITANIA, CARTHAGE, ca. 250-200 BC. AE22, Sear 6524. Hd. Tanit l. wreathed with corn/Head and neck of horse r., large pellet to r. EF. Superb large flan example of choice Punic style, a wonderful powerful and agressive horse head. Provenance: The Thomas Virzi collection, 1907.

4092. NUMIDIA, MICIPSA, 148-118 BC. AE27, Copenhagen 508v, Sear 6597v. Hd. of Micipsa l. with pointed beard/Horse galloping l., countermark of helmeted hd. (Athena?) on midsection, pellet below. AEF. Very rare this nice. Choice portrait of Micipsa. Provenance: The Thomas Virzi collection, 1907.

8545. SARDINIA, after 238 BC. AE22, Sear 1267. Head Persephone l./Three stalks of grain. VF. Rare. Nice example of this rare island.


SICULO PUNIC

9396. SICULO PUNIC, 350-325 BC. AR Tetradrachm, Sear 6434. Hd Artemis-Arethusa l., four dolphins around/Horse hd, palm tree behind, Punic inscription below. EF+. Excellent sharply struck example on an exceptionally wide flan, especially nice obverse with great style head of Arethusa on the flan surrounded by dolphins with excellent detail. Compare the Sear plate coin for a more usual syle and flan. Rv. has a little surface roughness.
