ONLY A FEW COINS OF THIS EXTREMELY RARE CAESAR KNOWN!

11355. VESPASIAN JR., c. 88-95 AD, struck 94/95 AD at Smyrna, Ionia. AE (16mm, 2.81 g, 12h). Obverse: OYHΣΠAΣIANOΣ NEOTEPOΣ bare headed bust of Vespasian Junior right. Reverse: ΣMYPNAIΩN, Nike advancing left holding palm branch. BMC 316; RPC II 1028; Kose Plate 31 V4/R7; Vagi 1164. Dark green patina. VF. Extremely rare. RR! Only a few examples known.

After Domitian's own son died in 82 AD a successor to the throne was lacking. In order to have heirs for his title, Domitian adopted two sons of his cousin Flavius Clemens and Flavia Domitilla III (see entry above) who were his great-nephews. They were renamed Vespasianus and Domitianus. Vespasianus Jr. was originally named Titus Flavius Domitianus. However he soon realized that having potential heirs meant a potential rival and possible assassination. So he had their father Flavius Clemens executed in 95 AD and their mother Domitilla III banished and the two boys either killed or exiled though their exact fate is unknown. This act recoiled on him as he was soon murdered by Stefanus, the steward of Flavia Domitilla III. There are no known coins bearing a name or portrait for Domitian Jr., and only this single issue for Vespasian Jr.

VERY RARE!

11357. DIVUS JULIUS MARINUS, father of Philip I. Arabia, Philippopolis mint. Died circa AD 246/7. AE (24mm, 8.07 g, 6h). Struck at Antioch, circa AD 247-249. Bareheaded bust right, with slight drapery, supported by eagle standing right / Roma or Allat standing left, holding phiale and spear; shield at side to left. Butcher, Philippopolis & Samosata pl. 25, 11; Spijkerman 2; SNG ANS 1402. Fine, green desert patina. Very rare.

The father of Philip I, Julius Marinus hailed from a small town in the province of Arabia (modern day Shuhba, Syria; the original name of the ancient town is unknown). Following the death of Marinus, Philip deified his father and had a temple to him built in his newly aggrandized hometown - now renamed Philippoplis and elevated to the rank of colonia. The neat fabric of the cityÕs coins is quite out of place for Arabia. This, combined with die links between the coins of Philippopolis, Zeugma, and Antioch, suggest production at a central location, with Antioch being the most likely place.

Brown clay with considerable remains of white pigment. Intact. 8 inches in height. Collected in the early 1900's in Greece by the grandmother of the current elderly owner. Shown to the Victoria and Albert museum in 1987 which confirmed its authenticity. Compare a slightly larger similarly dressed and posed figure listed at Royal Athena Galleries for $12,500.

'Tanagras' are named after the site in Boeotia, central Greece, where thousands of similar figures were unearthed in the early 1870s. Figures of men, children and comic actors were also found at Tanagra, but standing female figures are the most numerous. The chief appeal of Tanagra figures lies in their exceptional artistic quality usually considered to be the finest of all Greek figurines. The ladies are normally depicted in casual poses and their clothes, which usually consist of a thinner undergarment, the chiton, worn beneath a thicker cloak or himation, are typically pulled and twisted in pleasing patterns which emphasize the form of the figure beneath. Most Tanagra figures are mould made and sometimes have a vent cut in the back to ensure even distribution of heat in the firing. After firing, the figure was coated in a white slip, often a solution of chalk or white clay, and then colors were added on top. The artists who produced these figures were known as coroplasts, literally 'modelers of girls'.
